U.S. President-elect Joseph R. Biden Jr. has selected Xavier Becerra as his nominee for secretary of health and human services, the New York Times reported on Sunday.
Becerra is a former congressman who is now the Democratic attorney general of California.
Becerra is Hispanic-American, and his nomination would likely ease complaints from Congressional Hispanic caucus about lack of Latinos in the incoming Biden administration.

Becerra is the first Latino attorney general in California, and was the first Latino to serve as a member of the Ways and Means Committee.
