Biden ‘deeply saddened’ over passing of UAE President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahran: He was ‘a true partner and friend of the United States’

President Joseph R. Biden Jr. on Friday mourned the passing of the ruler of the United Arab Emirates Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahran, saying that he was “a true partner and friend of the United States.” Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed was the eldest son of the founder of the UAE Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan al-Nahyan.

“Jill and I were deeply saddened to learn of the passing of His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed al Nahyan.  Sheikh Khalifa was a true partner and friend of the United States throughout his decades-long tenure as President of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Abu Dhabi, and in his earlier role as Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi,” Biden wrote in a statement.

“On behalf of the American people, I offer my condolences to Sheikh Khalifa’s family and all Emiratis as they mourn this great loss. We will honor his memory by continuing to strengthen the longstanding ties between the governments and people of the United States and the United Arab Emirates,” the American leader added.

Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahran died on Friday at the age of 73, state media reported.

He suffered a stoke in 2014 and had rarely been seen in public ever since.

His brother Mohammed bin Zayed, who has been considered the de facto ruler of the country since 2014 is expected to be appointed to the top job.
