U.S. President-elect Joseph R. Biden Jr. plans to nominate Pete Buttigieg as Transportation Secretary, multiple outlets said on Tuesday, including CNN.

If confirmed, he will be the first openly gay member of his administration.

Buttigieg was an early candidate for the 2020 U.S. election. He saw early successes in the presidential race during the Democratic primaries before he was overtaken by Bernie Sanders and then Joe Biden.

The 38-year old Buttigieg is the former mayor of South Bend, Indiana, who has never held federal office.

Buttigieg had been rumored to be the Biden nominee for China.
