Thirteen French soldiers were killed in Mali, West Africa, on Monday night, during an anti-terror operation there, the French President Emmanuel Macron said.
The soldiers were fighting radical Islamist militants in the Sahel region.

“Thirteen of our soldiers died yesterday in Mali. They were engaged in a combat operation against terrorists. These thirteen heroes had only one goal: to protect us. I bow to the pain of their loved ones and comrades,” President Macron said on Twitter.
President Macron expressed his “greatest respect” for the fallen soldiers and “total support” for the French armed forces.
