U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that the United States was recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
The announcement was a departure from long standing American policy and a break from international consensus.
“Today we finally acknowledge the obvious that Jerusalem is the capital of Israel,” Trump said, adding that it was the “right thing to do”.
“I am directing the state department to begin preparation to move the United States Embassy from Telaviv to Jerusalem,” Trump added.
Trump asked the Arab world to drive away terrorists and ignorance from their midst, and embrace peace.
Commentators quickly pointed out that the “misguided” step will hurt America all over the Arab world, and may endanger American lives all over the world.
Many had condemned Israel for illegally driving away Palestinians from their land, saying that Israel had repeatedly violated international law since the 1967 war.
Commentators added that Mr. Trump by his announcement has just pushed a two-state solution over the cliff.
