The United States on Friday recorded nearly 39,000 new coronavirus infections, the highest spike in a single day.

According to the latest data collated by virus tracker website worldometers, there were 38958 new infections recorded in the United States on Friday alone, up from 31889 infections the previous day.

That number of single day infections is almost twice the total number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Africa.

In addition, COVID-19 has killed more than 52,000 Americans from over 925,000 total infections.

About 2000 deaths were recorded on Friday alone, down from about 2300 deaths on Thursday.

52,217 Americans had died from the virus as at 3.30 a.m. on Saturday, April 25, 2020, while 925,758 people had been infected. At least 110,432 others had recovered, according to the latest data.

The real numbers may be much higher because testing remains limited in the United States.

Data from Johns Hopkins University virus tracker showed that about 5 million Americans have been tested for the coronavirus as of Saturday morning out of a population of about 325 million.

New York, the epicenter of the crisis in the United States, has tested more people than anywhere else in the country with over 730,000 tests, followed by California with more than 474,000 tests, according to the latest tally.

As President Trump and a handful of Republican governors plan to reopen the country to relaunch economic activity, health experts have warned that without a wide range testing system, there might likely be a more severe resurgence of the virus.

CDC has warned that things may even get worse in the fall when the normal flu season would be mixed with the novel coronavirus.

On Friday, President Trump left the White House briefing room without taking a single question, after advising health experts on Thursday to look into how to inject patients with some powerful light, or heat their bodies, and then make them ingest disinfectants to cure the novel coronavirus. The bizarre advice or suggestion baffled many in the medical field, and prompted a company to warn against injecting or ingesting disinfectants to treat the coronavirus.

The briefing on Friday lasted only about 22 minutes, down from the about 2 hour mark Mr. Trump had hit in recent days.

Mr. Trump, who often plays the doctor, or repeatedly claims he has a better brain than many experts, has come under fire this week, after the FDA advised against using chloroquine to treat the coronavirus as the President has repeatedly suggested.

On Friday also, the White House tried to moved CNN to the back seat but the move was resisted. Mr. Trump has often labeled CNN, The New York Times and The Washington Post as fake news, for their investigative stories and incisive analyses as well as challenging questions.
