Local media reported that the First Lady was awarded a certificate of honor “for her contribution in raising awareness among administrative and religious leaders, women and youth, on the need to overcome the growing population in Burundi”.

Pictures of the official award presentation were sent out by State House photographers to various media houses.

When Mrs. Nkurunziza arrived at her husband’s office, she signed in and waited patiently in what looked like a conference room for visiting VIP guests.

President Nkurunziza was pictured standing next to his wife Denise Nkurunziza who paid him an official visit to present the award she received on her humanitarian work.

Other pictures captured the first couple standing side by side while displaying the award certificate.

The official presentation of the award triggered many reactions from the online community who could not understand why the First Lady had to seek a formal audience with her husband.

Nairobinews reported that “also awarded at the ceremony which was held on May 1, 2019 was a judo champion, governors and district administrators. The ceremony took place at a sports stadium at Rumonge, about 80km from the capital Bujumbura”.
