Controversial Nigerian preacher, Prophet T.B. Joshua of the Synagogue Church of All Nations in Lagos, has released a video showing him perform a “deliverance” on a lesbian girl from what he described as satanic “lesbian spirits”.
In the video, the prophet who is followed by millions of people around the world is seen performing a “deliverance” on a lesbian. The lesbian is heard saying she has always been attracted to women but has now been delivered by the anointed hands of the Nigerian prophet.
Why it matters: Homosexuality is a crime in Nigeria punishable by death in some sharia-dominated northern states. In other parts, it attracts a maximum penalty of 14 years in prison. Many people in Nigeria believe that homosexuality is not natural but a deviation caused by a deadly demonic sin. Nigeria remains a very religious country and many people tend to follow what the Bible and the Quran say about homosexuality, although the leaders who make laws do not do same when it comes to corruption and theft.
In the West, especially in Europe and the United States where homosexuality is more accepted, many may express outrage at the deliverance.
But Prophet TB Joshua seemed to be deflecting the criticisms by arguing that people should hate sin (homosexuality) but not the sinner (the homosexual). A hard argument to sell from Washington to London.
