Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos erupted at a press conference on Sunday, saying that his main opponent, who has been endorsed by his godfather, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is a criminal, a felon in the USA who was arrested and jailed for spending fake dollars at a night club in America and a man without any competence to serve.

Mr Ambode who addressed a venue full of journalists in Lagos on Sunday afternoon said he was ready for the primary elections on Monday, admitting for the first time that the task ahead of him was huge, but concluding that “we shall overcome.”

Ambode said Jide Sanwo-Olu, the candidate endorsed by his All Progressives Congress and his godfather Bola Tinubu, “has been arrested for spending fake US dollars in an American night club”.

“He lacks competency and health wise, he has gone through mental rehabilitation”.

He said such a criminal and unstable man should not be allowed to serve as Governor of Nigeria’s most populous state.

Why it matters: For political observers in Nigeria, Ambode has almost no chance to survive the primary elections tomorrow. His opponent has been endorsed by all the council members and godfathers in the state. Many believe that Ambode may even be impeached after losing tomorrow.
