I will not violate Nigeria’s constitution with a third term bid, President Buhari says, as rumors widen

Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari said on Friday he will not seek a third term in office when his second term ends in 2023.

“I said you should read the Constitution because I am not going to make a mistake. Besides the age, I am not going to contest for third term because I will go by the Constitution. The Constitution says two-terms. I’m going to be frank here because I won’t be needing anybody’s vote,” President Buhari said during a meeting of the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja, according to several reports.

Mr. Buhari’s clarification came as rumors continue to spread he may seek a third term in office.

His denial was similar to the one former President Olusegun Obasanjo repeatedly issued in 2005 and 2006 even as he was actively seeking to prolong his stay in office.
