The International Monetary Fund (IMF) Mission Chief for Egypt, Ivanna Vladkova Hollar, announced in a statement on Sunday that the Egyptian authorities and IMF staff held productive discussions in preparation for the first review mission of Egypt’s reform program. The talks took place on the sidelines of the World Bank and IMF Spring Meetings, addressing various topics related to program implementation and the outlook for the Egyptian economy.

Egypt’s reform program is supported by the IMF’s Extended Fund Facility (EFF), a long-term financial arrangement aimed at assisting countries in implementing comprehensive economic reform agendas. The program focuses on enhancing fiscal sustainability, boosting private sector growth, and fostering job creation, all with the aim of achieving macroeconomic stability and inclusive growth for the country.

During the meetings, the IMF and Egyptian officials discussed a range of issues, including the progress made in implementing key reform measures, as well as the challenges and risks to the program. Topics of discussion encompassed fiscal policy, monetary policy, structural reforms, and financial sector stability.

While the discussions were deemed fruitful, Hollar noted that they will continue virtually as both parties work towards initiating the first review mission. The review mission is a critical step in assessing the success of the implemented reforms and determining the next steps for Egypt’s economic trajectory.

The collaboration between the IMF and Egypt comes at a pivotal time, as the country faces significant economic challenges amid the ongoing global economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. The Egyptian government has been working diligently to implement the necessary reforms, and the support from the IMF’s EFF is expected to bolster these efforts.

The outcome of the first review mission will be crucial in shaping Egypt’s economic future, providing valuable insights into the effectiveness of the reform program and identifying areas that may need further attention. As the discussions continue, both the IMF and Egyptian authorities remain committed to working together to ensure the successful implementation of the reform program and ultimately achieve sustainable and inclusive growth for Egypt.
