U.S. President Joseph R. Biden Jr. is redeploying troops to Somalia to fight against al-Shabaab, ‘which has increased in strength and poses a heightened threat’, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said on Monday, the same day Somalia’s former leader Hassan Sheikh Mohamud was sworn into office. Mohamud was elected president on Sunday after receiving 214 votes from legislators in a poll that was open only to parliamentarians.
