A Nigerian Army Major and three soldiers have been gunned down in Rivers, a report said, ahead of tension-soaked supplementary legislative elections in the oil rich state.
Online newspaper, Sahararrporters.com, quoted a source as saying that the soldiers ran into an ambush and were shot dead by the militants.
Tension has been rising in Rivers with the former governor of the state, now minister of Transportation, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, relocating home from Abuja to ensure victory for his partymen.
The opposition People’s Democratic Party has accused the ruling All Progressives Congress of trying to rig the elections but warned of dire consequences if that happened.
As an oil rich state, analysts say leaving Rivers in the hands of the opposition is an error not to allow.
