A Nigerian woman thrown off a United Airlines flight in Texas after a white man complained she was stinking and could not travel beside her has filed a lawsuit alleging racial discrimination.
The incident represents another public relations blunder for United. The airline was already under fire in the United States for “reaccomodating” a doctor by dragging him violently off of a plane and killing a puppy by shoving it in an overhead bin
The Nigerian family was flying from Nigeria to Canada in 2016 when they had to switch planes in Houston.
The incident started when the mother who filed the suit, Queen Obioma, boarded the flight in Houston after arriving from Nigeria.
The suit alleged that after boarding the plane, a white man who was occupying her seat refused to move. She complained to a flight attendant but the crew told her to take a different seat.
The man then got up and went to the cockpit to talk to the pilot, the lawsuit alleges.
After Obioma used the bathroom before the plane took off, the man refused to let her occupy her seat when she returned.
As she insisted, she was informed by a flight crew that the pilot had requested her to leave the plane because the other passenger had complained he was not comfortable traveling next to her because she was stinking.
Obioma and children were also taken off the plane.
