A man set a house on fire in Brooklyn, New York City, with 16 people inside to end a curse hanging over him and for him to begin experiencing good luck and favor, authorities said on Thursday.
“He believed that he was cursed,” a law enforcement source with knowledge of the case said, according to New York Daily News. “He used to live in that residence with that family and got into a longstanding dispute with them before he left in 2015.
“He said he had a run of bad luck after he left, so be believed he could reverse the curse if he set the building on fire.”
Sean Figaro, 37, emptied the contents of a gas can outside his old home on E. 80th St. near Farragut Road in Canarsie about 2:18 a.m. Monday and set fire to the front of the building, the report said.
Officials said the blaze spread to the first floor, blocking people from going out the front entrance.
Firefighters battled with the blaze for 40 minutes and removed 16 people from the rear of the building. All of the injuries were minor.
Figaro was arrested after FDNY marshals recovered surveillance video of him running away from the home. They also found a video of Figaro pumping fuel into a gas can at a neighborhood station.
