President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden to meet with His Holiness Pope Francis in Rome

U.S. President Joseph R. Biden Jr. and First Lady Jill Biden will meet with His Holiness Pope Francis in the Vatican City on Friday afternoon to discuss global challenges, including climate change, COVID-19 and caring for the poor.

“They will discuss working together on efforts grounded in respect for fundamental human dignity, including ending the COVID-19 pandemic, tackling the climate crisis, and caring for the poor,” the White House said in an update.

White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki announced two weeks ago that the American leader, who is only the second Catholic U.S. President, and Pope Francis, will discuss how they can work together to address these challenges.

“The President and Dr. Biden will also visit Vatican City and have an audience with His Holiness Pope Francis on October 29. They will discuss working together on efforts grounded in respect for fundamental human dignity, including ending the COVID-19 pandemic, tackling the climate crisis, and caring for the poor,” Psaki said.

On Friday, President Biden will also hold a bilateral meeting with His Eminence Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Secretary of State, at the Vatican in Vatican City, Holy See.
 
He will then will hold a bilateral meeting with His Excellency Sergio Mattarella, President of the Italian Republic, at Quirinale Palace in Rome, Italy, and hold another bilateral meeting with His Excellency Mario Draghi, Prime Minister of the Italian Republic, at Chigi Palace in Rome, Italy.
 
The American leader will then hold a bilateral meeting with Emmanuel Macron, President of the French Republic, at the Embassy of France in Rome, Italy.

On Saturday, while in Italy, President Biden will attend the G20 Leaders’ Summit on October 30-31, before traveling to Glasgow from November 1-2 to participate in the World Leader Summit at the start of the 26th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP26).
