The President of Haiti Jovonel Moïse has been assassinated, officials said in a statement on Wednesday. The First Lady was also shot but not killed.
Moïse has served as Haiti’s president since February 2017.
Haitian Prime Minister Claude Joseph said Moïse was killed in his private residence in Port-au-Prince around 1 a.m. local time Wednesday by a group of assailants.
Joseph said the attack was “odious, inhumane, and barbarous.”
The government said the killers were speaking Spanish but did not identify them.
The attack followed years of protests against Moïse’s government, and calls for his resignation.
