Samantha Power meets with Strive Masiyiwa

The Administrator of the u.S. Agency of International Development (USAID) Samantha Power met on Thursday with Mr. Strive Masiyiwa, Chairman of Econet Global and Special Envoy of the African Union (AU).

“The Administrator pledged USAID’s partnership with the AU’s Africa Vaccine Acquisition Task Team (AVATT), and congratulated Mr. Masiyiwa on AVATT’s recent deal with Moderna,” USAID spokesperson Rebecca Chalif said in a statement. “The Administrator and Mr. Masiyiwa further discussed the challenges of vaccine accessibility and COVID-19 response across the continent.”

In particular, they discussed the importance of increasing an immediate emphasis on vaccine delivery and uptake, and pursuing longer-term efforts toward greater vaccine production capacity on the continent.

They also affirmed the important role of the Africa CDC, and strong U.S. backing for that capable institution as it approaches a leadership transition, Chalif added.
