In a meeting held on February 8, 2024, U.S. Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken met with Dr. Ismahane Elouafi, the newly appointed Executive Managing Director of the CGIAR, to deliberate on the critical role of science and innovation in enhancing global food security. The meeting underscored the urgency of addressing hunger and malnutrition challenges worldwide.

During their discussion, Secretary Blinken emphasized the importance of the Vision for Adapted Crops and Soils (VACS), a strategic agenda developed by CGIAR to bolster agricultural productivity. This initiative aims to scale climate-resilient crop varieties and improve soil health, contributing to sustainable food systems and resilience against climate change.

Secretary Blinken expressed his appreciation for CGIAR’s commitment to aligning its extensive global research capabilities with the VACS agenda. CGIAR, a global research partnership focused on agricultural innovation, boasts a network of over 10,000 personnel working across more than 80 countries. This vast resource is instrumental in advancing scientific solutions to some of the most pressing agricultural challenges.

The meeting between Secretary Blinken and Dr. Elouafi highlights the United States’ support for CGIAR’s endeavors and its broader commitment to leveraging scientific research and innovation in tackling global food security issues. By fostering collaboration and supporting initiatives like VACS, the U.S. aims to contribute to a future where hunger and malnutrition are significantly reduced through sustainable agricultural practices.
