The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has announced the launch of the 2023 U.S. Strategy and National Action Plan on Women, Peace, and Security (WPS), reaffirming its commitment to advancing gender equity and equality in global peacebuilding efforts.

The newly released strategy and action plan emphasize the critical role women play in promoting sustainable peace and security worldwide. Research has consistently demonstrated that the full and meaningful participation of women in peace and security initiatives contributes to the long-term stability and prosperity of societies. Nations with higher levels of gender equality tend to be more prosperous, secure, and democratic. Moreover, women’s involvement in peace processes has been shown to strengthen agreements, treaties, and ceasefires, with a 35 percent greater likelihood of enduring for at least 15 years when women are engaged in their development.

Despite these proven benefits, barriers to women’s participation in peace and security processes persist globally. The 2023 U.S. Strategy and National Action Plan on WPS aim to address these challenges and prioritize gender equity and equality in efforts to build sustainable peace across the world.

USAID, as part of this initiative, will continue its mission to empower women and girls while elevating their experiences and contributions in conflict resolution, peacebuilding, and the fight against all forms of gender-based violence. The agency is committed to recognizing and promoting women’s and girls’ roles as climate leaders, innovators, and decision-makers in its programs. USAID reaffirms its strong support for women’s leadership in peace and security endeavors, recognizing their vital role in promoting lasting peace and addressing global challenges.

The 2023 U.S. Strategy and National Action Plan on Women, Peace, and Security reflect the United States’ dedication to fostering a more inclusive, equitable, and peaceful world by actively engaging and empowering women as agents of change and builders of sustainable peace.
