Congressman Matt Gaetz (FL-01) has released a comprehensive follow-up report shedding light on the perilous conditions faced by over 1,000 U.S. service members stationed in Niger, Africa, amid an ongoing diplomatic dispute.

Titled “Part II Interim Report – Unwelcome in Niger,” the report unveils alarming revelations regarding the Biden administration’s handling of troop welfare and the presence of Russian military personnel on U.S. installations in the region.

The supplemental report, authored by Congressman Gaetz’s office, underscores the vulnerability of U.S. troops, who are being utilized as bargaining chips by both the U.S. and Nigerien governments amid diplomatic negotiations over troop withdrawal. Highlighting the denial of essential supplies and diplomatic overflights crucial for troop rotations, the report paints a dire picture of neglect and endangerment faced by American servicemen and women.

Key findings from the report include testimonies from active-duty whistleblowers and their spouses, detailing critical shortages of medications and medical supplies essential for troop health and safety. Shockingly, the report reveals instances of extortion at local airports, where passengers are coerced into paying exorbitant fees for luggage transport.

Furthermore, the report corroborates earlier claims of the presence of Russian troops on U.S. installations in Niger, raising serious security concerns for U.S. forces and their families. Congressman Gaetz asserts that the Biden administration’s attempts to conceal these conditions are aimed at masking the failure of its Africa strategy, characterized by political instability and a lack of tangible progress.

In response to the findings, Congressman Gaetz has called for urgent action from the Biden administration to prioritize the safety and well-being of U.S. troops in Niger. Gaetz demands immediate resupply efforts and diplomatic interventions to ensure the protection of American personnel from exploitation by foreign entities.

The release of “Part II Interim Report – Unwelcome in Niger” comes on the heels of Congressman Gaetz’s initial report filed in April, which first brought attention to the precarious situation facing U.S. troops in Niger. As calls for accountability grow louder, Congressman Gaetz remains steadfast in his commitment to advocating for the welfare of American servicemen and women deployed abroad.
