U.S. Deputy Secretary of Commerce Don Graves will embark on a mission to South Africa to participate in the 20th African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) Forum.

The two-day Ministerial meeting, coupled with the one-day Private Sector Forum, will take place in Johannesburg, South Africa, from November 2-4, 2023. Deputy Secretary Graves aims to strengthen commercial relations with partner countries, including South Africa, and will be accompanied by members of the President’s Advisory Council on Doing Business in Africa.

This visit marks Deputy Secretary Graves’ second journey to the African continent and serves as a significant follow-up to the highly successful U.S.-Africa Business Forum. The mission’s primary objective is to advance inclusive economic growth and enhance supply chain resilience on both sides of the Atlantic.

The AGOA Forum has become a vital platform for fostering economic cooperation and trade relations between the United States and African nations. It provides an opportunity for senior government officials, business leaders, and policymakers to engage in dialogue, explore new avenues of collaboration, and address challenges and opportunities in the commercial sphere.

Deputy Secretary Graves will participate in high-level discussions and meetings with senior government officials from various partner countries during the Ministerial meeting. These engagements aim to strengthen ties, promote trade and investment, and further economic development between the United States and African nations. Additionally, the Private Sector Forum will facilitate meaningful exchanges between U.S. businesses and their African counterparts, fostering partnerships that drive mutual growth and prosperity.

The mission underscores the U.S. government’s commitment to deepening its engagement with African nations, supporting entrepreneurship, and promoting economic opportunities. By strengthening commercial relations and encouraging collaboration, Deputy Secretary Graves and the U.S. delegation aim to contribute to the growth and resilience of supply chains on both sides of the Atlantic.

Deputy Secretary Graves’ participation in the 20th AGOA Forum reinforces the United States’ commitment to building enduring partnerships with African countries and underscores the importance of economic cooperation in addressing global challenges and opportunities.
