In one of his most direct and severe attacks to date, the former Nigerian President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, known worldwide for his blunt talk, has branded President Muhammadu Buhari a clear failure giving a litany of useless excuses.
He called on Nigerians to rise against him in 2019, saying he doesn’t deserve to return after such an abysmal performance.
Mr. Obasanjo, widely respected in Nigeria despite his own corrupt government between 1999 and 2007, said Nigerians elected Buhari because there were challenges, and giving a litany of excuses for non performance is a clear indication that he is not fit for the job of commander-in-chief of Africa’s most populous country.
He made his remarks at a fully packed press conference, a clear indication that he was out for war.
It was Mr. Obasanjo’s biggest attack and Mr. Buhari’s most serious challenge ahead of his reported planned meeting with President Donald Trump.
Why it matters: Nigerians go to the polls in February next year to elect a new President and Mr. Buhari seems to have gone from hero in 2015 to a failed leader in 2018. His sea of promises has failed to come to life more than three years after he defeated former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan.
Under him, the naira is weaker than it has ever been since independence in 1960. Millions have lost their jobs, and electricity has continued to degenerate. This is in addition to escalating insecuty in several parts of the country, including in the northeast where Boko Haram has continued to wreak havoc with kidnappings as well as bomb and gun attacks.
